Blackmouth Cur Heritage
This breeds reputation of courage, intelligence, Versatile
abilities, loyalty to the family, plus they are a hardy healthy strong breed.
The breed known as The Ladner bred line of cur dogs, Have been bred by the
Ladner family for several generations, The Ladner families Blackmouth Cur
dog's is probably unequaled by any other for their long linage of selective
breeding to produce a line of dogs that is known today as Ladner Yellow
Blackmouth Cur. The Ladner families made South Mississippi their home . These
dogs are a breed that much good can be said about them and still leave many
positive things to be said. One Blackmouth Cur owner sums up his opinion of this
breed pretty well. He stated; If you know of any one breed of dog that can begin
to measure up to all the attributes shown by this breed now for several
generations. These dogs have proven themselves to be some of the greatest
hunters of any breed known to man for a variety of large and small game. Most
dogs are normally bred for a specific need or use that is desired of a dog. For
example a retriever is bred to retrieve, A herding dog is bred for herding, A
hunting dog is usually bred for a specific type of game to be hunted. If you
desire a family protection companion most looks for another breed that has been
specifically bred for that purpose. With a Blackmouth Cur you can take this one
breed, one dog, and they can pretty much cover most needs or traits desired of a
good all around smart dog.
One can use the same dogs to hunt coon, squirrel, cat, hogs. deer and etc..
These dogs are used for herding livestock such as cattle, sheep, goats and etc.,
as guard dogs, and
to track wounded game. They are silent on the track and open on the tree. They hunt close and are obedient to commands. They have
been a part of our country's heritage since before 1800 and some believe they
were used by Native Americans. The first Blackmouth Curs registered, were Ladner Blackmouth Curs by the National Kennel Club in April 1964. Mr. L.H.
Ladner had such extensive written documentation of his family's breeding history
that the N.K.C. recognized the breed. They also are distinguished by being used
for search and rescue emergency services. Dating back over 200 years these dogs
have been selectively bred to produce the desired traits that cur owners of
today enjoy and appreciate.
The Blackmouth Cur is certainly not a new breed of dog. These dogs have been
used extensively for several generations since early American
settlers and passed down as you would any family air loom. Their breeding
heritage has got to be respected as one of the greatest dog breeds of all times.
If you ask a Blackmouth Cur breeder or owner why this breed has grown so much in
popularity over the years they will probably tell you that the dogs themselves
are responsible for their increasing demand. This breed will work or hunt hard
all day long doing everything in their power to please their masters. It doesn't
matter what the task at hand is. When the work day is over they are happy to
return home to play with the children and protect the families home and property
while the family sleeps.
The old saying sleep with one eye open could describe the cur. Although they
don't really sleep with one eye open they are very light sleepers and they rely
heavily on their keen sense of smell and hearing when there napping. These Cur
dogs are becoming more popular with people for many reasons. Smaller family
dogs, and hunting dogs are being killed by packs of coyotes, wolves, large cats,
such as mountain lions, and bears are a big concern of people in several states.
The Blackmouth Cur's also make excellent jogging, hiking, and traveling
companions. This breed of dog has a natural protective instinct and are very
easy for their master to handle. These Cur dogs will fight until death to
protect family members.
More and more people are very concerned about children playing outside the home
unattended. Reports of attacks on humans by wild animals and rogue dogs is on
the increase. The Blackmouth Cur's nature is to protect the children. This is
displayed when a stray dog, animal, or strange person tries to come near the
children, or other family members. It comes natural for the Blackmouth Cur dog
to get between the intruder and the children, or other family members. The dog
will warn the intruder he is getting too close. He will growl and if necessary
show his teeth to get his message across to the stray dog or other intruders to
move on. This warning should not be taken lightly by the intruder. The
Blackmouth Curs are known for their grittiness and physical abilities. These
dogs are naturally caring and obedient to members of the family. They are easily
handled by voice commands When you let them know everything is ok and there is
no problem then they are ok with the situation at hand. If allowed to this breed
loves to go with their master and make themselves handy if they are needed. If a
Blackmouth Cur is being considered for a life in the city he will need a big yard
to run and play in. They love work, hunting, and play. Small apartment living is
not recommended for the Blackmouth Cur. Farm or rural living is most recommended
for this breed. The Blackmouth Cur's are very protective of their human family.
They do not like for the children of the family to be spanked. This is a breed
that was valued verily highly by early settlers and rural Americans. Their
importance and value placed upon them was in the same class as a good milk cow,
work mules, oxen, and horses or other cherished valuables owned by the family.
Today's owners of this breed will testify The Blackmouth Cur truly has earned A
heritage of honor, pride, courage, and one very outstanding canine companion to
mankind.
