According to the history of the Black Mouth Cur owners and breeders they will declare there is none better. If we study the abundant information that is available regarding this breed and their history it's hard not to believe that this legendary dog was not truly a co-pioneer of our countries rugged southern territory.

The Black Mouth Cur is a very muscular, rugged and sturdy breed. The dog’s coat comes in a wide variety of yellow shades, brindle and fawns. Some dogs are born with a heavier coat while others are born with a lighter one. This difference between coats can appear even in the same litter. The dog’s muzzle is black or tan and in some cases, in the same color as the coat. The dog has hanging medium-sized ears .

The Black Mouth Cur has a deep and solid chest. Regarding the dog’s tail, it is rather long. Some of the dogs are born with a short tail. Many experienced hunters affirm that the Black Mouth Cur is the best hunting dog available. Very recommended for squirrel, bear, boar, deer, small and large wild cats, and raccoon hunts. They also make excellent dogs for working livestock. It's an interesting fact about this dog is known for not retreating. This dog is also very efficient for baying and treeing.

The Black Mouth Origin :

Regarding the origin of the Black Mouth Curs there seems to be a dispute about this topic. The first registered Black Mouth Curs were the Ladner Yellow Black Mouth Curs with the support of the National Kennel Club in April 1964. The Red Alabama Black Mouth Cur is believed to have its origin in Alabama although Red Black Mouth Curs are to be found in Tennessee and Florida .

Height : Between 16 and 25 inches ( approximately 40 to 64 centimeters )
Weight : Between 45 and 95 pounds ( approximately 20 to 43 kilos )

This dog will truly give 100% as a hunting dog and as a consequence it needs a good bit of exercise. The Black Mouth Curs are one of the most intelligent dogs available; breeders affirm that a pup is capable of training himself to tree. A very loyal dog, eager to please his master. An interesting fact about these dogs is that the male Black Mouth Curs are more affectionate with the women and children of the family they prefer them as company.

A very important thing to know regarding their training, they mustn’t be spanked or stroked to train because this is a very counter-productive technique. Remember that the Black Mouth Curs are very sensitive to the voice of their master so it is advisable to use a stern voice only when disciplining them. Their life expectancy is around 12-16 years.
